The New Automated Way for Volume Calculation Saves Hours of Work

Volume calculations are everyday work for marine surveyors and engineers. There are hours of tutorial videos, countless articles and studies on the internet about how to do volume calculations. You go through several steps and need thorough expertise and typically a variety of software to get the work done. Still, in many types of projects volume calculations are one of the most essential tasks.

How to do volume calculations with just a few clicks

What if volume calculation could be done with just a few clicks? Select the area you want to calculate the volume data from and let GISGRO online platform do the rest. The fundamental steps for volume calculation from point clouds are automated, so your work gets easier. Let’s take an example.

You have surveyed the harbor area and have uploaded a point cloud of the bathymetry in GISGRO.

  1. There is accumulation on the seabed and safe clearance depth of 8 meters is not met. Dredging is needed.
  2. You choose the area you need to have dredged from the map. Adjust the depth (cut height) to 8 meters.
  3.  You see the volume to be dredged immediately. You can also download a .dxf file of the area boundaries or volume calculation report to be send to the dredging company.

From the video you saw how simple the volume calculation in GISGRO really is. Moreover, the tool allows you to adjust the area and updates the volumes accordingly. For example, if you need to ask for a quote or to plan a dredging project, all the needed information is easily available in GISGRO.

Put your 3D data to work

Volume calculation tool can be used in various other purposes than dredging as well, for example estimating water reservoirs or measuring stock piles. The idea behind GISGRO is to create an online platform for 3D data utilization, and we think the best way for putting 3D data to work is to make the tool easy-to-use and available for everyone. GISGRO has built-in calculations for contours, soundings and volume, you just decide which ones you want to use.

Try it yourself! Get a free demo account and test how quickly you can get volume information from the pre-uploaded demo harbor data. No pressure, but we tested it on our marketing team, and they picked it up quite quickly 😉
